Choosing a great topic is the first step to a successful National History Day project. There are several things to consider. First, is your teacher requiring you to choose a topic in a certain area, say The Civil War, or Colorado History? If so, then think about what interests you most about that required area. If you teacher is letting you choose any topic, then think about things that you like to do, or things that other people might not know a lot about. Remember, every subject has a history, so you could pick a topic that has to do with sports, or music, or something scientific. If you work with what you already like, you will have a lot of fun with your project.
Successful History Day topics are narrow. Trying to work with a topic that is too broad, or trying to include too much information can be frustrating, and in the end, your project will be harder. Click here to see examples of how to narrow your topic.
